The city's name derives from a settlement founded on St. Lucia's Day in 1566 near Jupiter Inlet, making it the third-oldest still-in-use European place name in the United States after La Florida and St. Augustine. Port St. Lucie was incorporated on April 27, 1961, after the General Development Corporation purchased 40,000 acres along the St. Lucie River in 1958 with a $50 million budget and opened the first bridge in 1959. Major residential developments including St. Lucie West, which brought 7,000 jobs to the area in the early 2000s, and Tradition, a 1950s-themed community developed beginning in 2006 with 13 million square feet of commercial space, have shaped the city's growth. As a principal city in the Port St. Lucie metropolitan area with an estimated population of 502,521 as of 2021, the city experienced significant economic challenges during the 2007-2009 housing crisis, with nearly 11,000 foreclosures in 2008. Vero Beach is the county seat of Indian River County, Florida, located approximately 85 miles southeast of Orlando along the Indian River Lagoon and Atlantic Ocean on the state's Treasure Coast. With a 2020 census population of 16,354, the city earned the nickname "The Hibiscus City" and was ranked the 7th Best Small Beach Town in Florida by Southern Living Magazine in 2023. The area's history spans from controversial 1915 Pleistocene-era human remains discoveries to a 1715 Spanish treasure fleet wreck that attracted pirates, including English privateer Henry Jennings who stole £87,500 in gold and silver. Vero was officially chartered on June 10, 1919, and redesignated as the county seat of newly-formed Indian River County on May 19, 1925, after which it was renamed Vero Beach. The city developed significantly during World War II when the U.S. Navy established a Naval Air Station on 1,500 acres in 1942, and later became a center for aviation manufacturing when Piper Aircraft relocated its administrative and manufacturing operations there in 1961. Stuart, Florida, is the county seat of Martin County in southeastern Florida with a population of 17,425 according to the 2020 census, making it the 126th largest city in Florida. Originally settled in 1870 and renamed Stuart in 1895 to honor local landowner Homer Hine Stuart Jr., the city was incorporated as a town in 1914 and chartered as a city in 1925 when Martin County was created. The city adopted its famous slogan "Sailfish Capital of the World" in 1957 due to the abundance of sailfish in nearby waters, and it gained historical significance as part of Florida's Treasure Coast, where 18th-century Spanish galleons carrying gold and silver were shipwrecked. Located near the St. Lucie River, Indian River Lagoon, and Atlantic Ocean, Stuart is frequently cited as one of the best small towns to visit in the United States and is part of the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area. With a tropical rainforest climate featuring hot, humid summers and warm, drier winters, Stuart has experienced 19 hurricanes since 1871, including major storms like Hurricane Wilma in 2005.
