Garden City is a village in Nassau County on Long Island, New York, with a population of 23,272 as of the 2020 census, located primarily within the town of Hempstead. Founded in 1869 by Irish-born millionaire Alexander Turney Stewart on the Hempstead Plains, the community was developed around the acclaimed Garden City Hotel, designed by McKim, Mead & White in 1895, and connected by the Central Railroad of Long Island that opened in 1873.
