Fresno is a city in California's San Joaquin Valley, located approximately 220 miles north of Los Angeles, 170 miles south of Sacramento, and near Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia National Parks. With a population of 542,107 as of the 2020 census, it is California's fifth-most populous city, the largest inland city in the state, and the 34th-most populous city in the nation, covering 114.7 square miles. Founded in 1872 as a Central Pacific Railroad station and incorporated in 1885, Fresno developed from irrigation innovations by Moses Church starting in 1870 that transformed the surrounding agricultural landscape into a productive region. The city serves as the county seat of Fresno County and the economic hub of the San Joaquin Valley, with the metropolitan region heavily dependent on large-scale agricultural production. Fresno is also the third-largest majority-Hispanic city in the United States, with 50.5% of its population being Hispanic as of 2020. Visalia is a city in California's San Joaquin Valley and serves as the county seat of Tulare County, one of the nation's most productive agricultural counties. With a population of 141,384 according to the 2020 census, it ranks as the fifth-most populous city in the San Joaquin Valley, the 38th in California, and 183rd in the United States. The area was first settled by the Yokuts and Mono tribes, with the modern settlement founded in 1852 as "Four Creeks" before being renamed Visalia in 1853 after surveyor Nathaniel Vise's ancestral home in Kentucky. Early development was spurred by the Kern River gold rush, the 1859 addition to John Butterfield's Overland Stage route from St. Louis to San Francisco, and the 1860 arrival of the telegraph, with the city achieving full city status through incorporation in 1874. Visalia gained regional notoriety in 1893 when train bandits John Sontag and Chris Evans were apprehended in the Battle of Stone Corral outside the city. Madera, the county seat of Madera County in California's San Joaquin Valley, was founded in 1876 as a timber settlement at the terminus of a 60-mile wooden flume constructed by the California Lumber Company. The city's name, Spanish for "lumber," reflected its origins, though it incorporated as a city on March 27, 1907, and Madera County was established on May 16, 1893. At its peak around 1900, the Madera Sugar Pine Company's mill produced up to 50 million board feet of lumber annually until operations ceased in 1931 during the Great Depression. The economy transitioned to agriculture during the 1930s-1940s, with irrigation from the San Joaquin River enabling expansion of vineyards, fig and peach orchards, and later almonds, pistachios, cotton, and alfalfa. As of the 2020 census, Madera had a population of 66,224.
